Living Carmanah's Vision at Solar Power Systems in Calgary

Canary Derby

Logistics Manager Matt Lannigan and his team-mates at Carmanah's Solar Power Systems facility in Calgary, Alberta, are on a mission to find facilities to recycle anything that can be recycled, a real challenge in Calgary, a city with no municipal recycling program! Lannigan and his co-workers feel that it is important to deal with workplace waste in socially responsible ways.

So far, local organizations have been found to accept everything from office paper and cardboard, cans and bottles, metal and aluminum, and plastic and Styrofoam for recycling. Matt says that his colleagues are appreciative of the opportunity to reduce waste. "It's just the right thing for us all to do both at home and in the workplace," he says, adding that many employees have begun bringing recyclables from home to add to the bins that are stationed throughout the building.

Driving Early Detection of Cancer

Canary Derby
In 2006 and 2007, Carmanah participated in the Canary Derby to Drive Early Cancer Detection, raising funds for the B.C. Cancer Foundation. In 2007, Carmanah's employees and suppliers contributed over $10,000, helping to raise $115,000 for cancer detection research.

Food Bank Challenge

VIATeC Food Bank Challenge
Carmanah employees participate in the annual VIATeC Food Bank Challenge, joining their fellow local technology community colleagues in supporting Victoria's Mustard Seed Food Bank. Since the inception of the Challenge four years ago, $466,000 of food and cash has been donated from Vancouver Island Technology companies. Each year, company involvement increases significantly, and in 2006, sixty technology companies participated, making it the largest Food Bank drive to date.

Light Up the World
Carmanah received the Global 100 Eco-Tech Award at Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan. The cash award of $10,000 was used to establish an endowment for the Carmanah Prize in Eco-Technology at the University of Victoria, providing an annual award to a student enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering program for the best project with a focus on eco-technology.

As part of Carmanah's product recycling initiative, the Company donates products that are returned but operational to charitable organizations around the world. In one recent example, Carmanah donated a M601 solar-powered white LED marine lantern to a Canadian who, in turn. delivered it to a family in Nepal while there on a volunteer mission in March 2007. With no electricity, the family had no light at night - they were able to use the M601 marine lantern to provide enough illumination for their children to read and study.
